What Are The Requirements To Be Insured With Maif?

Maif stands for Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund or Maryland Auto Insurance and this is a state owned insurance company that was created in 1972 with the sole mission to insure the uninsured. This is their reason for existing. To make sure  that no one goes without car insurance in the state of Maryland. If for one reason or another, you are having  difficulty finding some insurance company to insure you then simply call a MAIF agent. So what are the requirements to be insured with MAIF? To be insured with MAIF you must meet the following requirements: 

  1. )You Must Be A Maryland Resident: Car or Auto is governed by state law and so the laws of other state do apply in Maryland . So it is critical that you be a Maryland resident to be insured by Maif. 
  2. ) You Must Own The Car the You Are Insuring: There is concept in insurance called ,”insurable interest,” meaning that you must have a financial interest in the property that you are insuring. You cannot insure a car that belongs to your friend because you have no insurable interest in their car. 
  3. 3) The car that you are insuring must have a valid Maryland Registration: You cannot insure a vehicle that is registered to someone else. 
  4. You must have a valid Maryland Driver’s License: So you must have a valid Maryland driver’s license or a valid Maryland registration. 
  5. You Must Have Been Turned Down by at least two insurance companies in Maryland. These are the core requirements to be insured with Maif.
